  4.     It is regrettable that Poland's Franciszek Cardinal Macharski
  5. reneged on his promise to move the Carmelite nuns from their
  6. convent at the site of the Auschwitz concentration camp (RELIGION,
  7. Aug. 21). I believe the nuns do not belong there. Although it is
  8. true that Christians perished at the camp, the plan to eliminate
  9. all the Jewish people was so horrendous that the sisters should
  10. show more sensitivity to the memory of the 6 million Jews who died
  11. in the Holocaust. These men, women and children were put to death
  12. not because they practiced a religious life but because they were
  13. born Jewish.

  18.     Hundreds of thousands of Poles died at Auschwitz, including
  19. many priests and nuns. To force the Carmelite nuns to leave their
  20. convent outside the barbed-wire perimeter of Auschwitz, where they
  21. pray for all the Nazi victims, is to rewrite history.
